05 Mar Unlocking the Mystery of You: The Pinnacle of Purpose
Do you know who the most important person in your life is? Just look in the mirror and you will see – it’s you. Whether you’re a college student, a housewife, a salesman, or the president of the United States of America, the most important person in your life is and will always be you.
That being said, your primary objective in life should be to know who you are so that you can position yourself to succeed in offices aligned with your purpose. After all, your purpose is the collective reasoning behind your existence. As one philosopher puts it, “Purpose is the only real reason you are here, for you exist because your purpose exists. Thus apart from purpose, you have no authentic motivation for living. You may very well exist, but when you’re gone, very few will ever know that you were here.”
D. L. Anderson’s Unlocking the Mystery of You: The Pinnacle of Purpose is based on principles he developed through his own life experiences as he worked his way toward his own purpose. Anderson relates times during his life when he found himself off track and distracted from his purpose, as well as times when he found personal fulfillment.
Unlocking the Mystery of You is sort of like a personal cheerleader, urging you on when obstacles fall in your path. Like a parent in the background, Anderson gives you that nudge to get back on the bike and keep moving toward your goals.
The part that is omitted is the process of actually discovering what your purpose is. Anderson pushes the reader to continue on the right path, but unfortunately, that’s with the assumption the reader already knows where their destiny lies. The book won’t provide any profound revelations about why we’re here or how we know when we reach self-actualization, but it serves as soft motivation for staying true to ourselves in the process.
I think Anderson has the right idea. Sometimes we reach a point where we’re overwhelmed with discouragement and question whether we actually have a purpose in life and if it’s all worth the effort. Unlocking the Mystery of You reminds us obstacles are placed there for a reason, and it’s our response to them that determines how successful we become in life. Be confident, expect the unexpected, and stay focused. However, the book would be a bit more reader friendly if it was more concise and less wordy. I struggled to enjoy it due to the writing style. I hope to see more from Anderson in the future, but with more thought to the reader’s enjoyment.
