Each chapter in the book is based on curated content. Ryan shifted his role as author to curator to include examples and advice from prominent social media influencers. Just as social media typically operates on peer collaboration, so does Understanding Social Media.
With this in mind, it’s not written in a single voice. Each chapter has a different feel and perspective. Personally, I felt this did even more to illustrate the fragmentation of ideas when it comes to social media experts. One person clearly feels a particular method is integral to creating a successful social media plan, while another dismisses it as trivial.
What it comes down to is that with social media, each business is as unique as a snowflake and what works for one might tank for another. It’s up to the social media marketer to test the waters and find out which technique is right for the client. That’s why providing varying perspectives, like Understanding Social Media does, is so important. It provides the reader the opportunity to weigh all the options and decide which one is best for them. The reader isn’t limited to the expertise of one person who has only worked with clients in a particular niche.
Another great feature of the book is each chapter also includes real world examples of social media campaigns from large companies and organizations. It details what they wanted to accomplish, the methods used to meet their goals, and the end results. It’s a great way to get ideas to incorporate into campaigns and find out what the big guys are doing.
The authors clearly place emphasis on defining objectives and how you’re going to achieve them. With the case studies and various approaches, it’s a comprehensive guide to making social media work for your business. It also goes so far as to illustrate how social media success translates to business success and sales, which is sometimes difficult to explain to clients (and ourselves). Understanding Social Media is perfect for someone who recognizes the benefits of social media marketing and wants to take it to the next level and learn to deliver and measure results.
