21 Jan Book Review: Become Your Own Bliss by Veronica N. Cuyugan
Bliss is a pretty powerful state of being. If you’re like me, you can probably count on one hand the different situations in which you have experienced true bliss during your lifetime.
What if we could learn to live in a state of eternal bliss, even during the direst of circumstances?
Teaching readers to incorporate bliss in every day mundane tasks is the goal of certified life coach Veronica N. Cuyugan. Her book, Become Your Own Bliss, is a guide for achieving this rare state of happiness.
Cuyugan defines bliss as “perfect, utmost, intense happiness; great, enveloping joy.” Even she is quick to admit that she is still a work in progress and has not managed to experience bliss every second of the day.
However, Cuyugan reached her own version of “rock bottom” at a younger age. It is through her experiences of overcoming her self-made adversities that she developed a plan for permanent well-being. This plan became the basis for her coaching practice and the bliss handbook.
The author admits she came from a stable, loving family who provided a strong foundation on which to build her life. However, she let self-doubt intervene and managed to reach a point where substance abuse and unhealthy addictions were fueling her behavior. Eventually she had to move back home, take time to detox and allow her values to return to the forefront of her mind.
Through exercise, meditation, and deep self-reflection, she was able to shift her perspective and create a positive way of life. She shares her own personal experiences, as well as those of friends and clients, to illustrate how fear can create a detrimental effect on our lives.
Before you assume this is another sugary-sweet, sunshine and rainbows “positive thinking cures all” type of book, let me assure you that Cuyugan is as real and down to earth as it gets. She’s blunt and honest in her assessments of herself and others. What she experienced was similar to what many girls fall into – a state of mind where they’re never quite enough and they’re looking for love from someone else to validate their worth.
Cuyugan was able to get her own life back on track with very little outside assistance. Her biggest influence was probably the words of wisdom from her extremely level-headed mother. Through her example, the reader learns how to create a path to their own bliss and discovery of self-worth.
The author relates all of her trials and tribulations through a wicked sense of humor. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. She shoots straight from the hip, and it’s clear she’s got 20/20 hindsight at this point in her life. She tells a story to which women everywhere can relate, and hopefully they can take her advice to create a blissful existence.
